The building is the oldest post office building in the city and appears in Pondicherry’s 1793 Town map when it was used as the Pondicherry's harbour office during the French period. Prior to that, approximately in 1790’, the structure served as a new custom house.

This structure represents a bridge between Pondicherry’s past and present, due to its sea front location and the numerous transformations it underwent over the years.
